Scope and Content Glenmoray-Glenlivet Distillery, Bruceland Road, Elgin, Morayshire (Moray council area) This distillery was converted from a brewery in 1897 by the Glen Moray Glenlivet Distillery Co Ltd. It was silent from 1910 to c1923, when it was acquired by Macdonald and Muir, blenders, Leith. It is still owned by their successors, Glenmorangie plc. This view shows the horizontal steam engine which drove the distillery machinery when it was first converted. The cylinder is on the left, with the control valve beside it, and the governor to control the speed above it. This engine was made by Chrystal of Perth, who specialised in distillery steam engines, and was one of only three surviving in situ in 1980. This distillery was a product of the 1890s whisky boom, which was at its height in Moray and Banffshire. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
