Scope and Content Portsoy Harbour, Banffshire (Aberdeenshire council area) Portsoy harbour is in two sections, an inner west harbour dating in essence from the late 17th century, and an outer, east harbour dating from the 1830s. The earlier works were built primarily for trading, the later for fishing. This view shows the west harbour from the east, showing the north breakwater pier to the right, and the east pier to the left. In the left background is a former granary, now used in connection with the local marble (serpentine) industry. The west harbour is one of the oldest surviving substantial harbour works in Scotland, and of the greatest importance. It has become a focal point in a successful summer festival of wooden boats.
