Scope and Content Glenfarclas Distillery, Ballindalloch, Banffshire This distillery was founded in 1836 by a farmer, Robert Hay. It was eventually acquired by the Grant family, who formed a limited company with Pattison Elder and Co in 1895, which rebuilt it. Pattisons collapsed in 1898, and the Grants again took over. This view shows the old malt mill, in which the malt required for mashing was crushed between pairs of rollers. The malt was weighed in a hopper above the mill. Mills did not wear out, so this one was probably replaced because it was too small. It is important for efficient mashing that the malt is crushed to give the right mixture of coarse and fine particles of kernel. Too fine a mixture can make the mash tun clog and the malt liquor take longer to drain through the perforated floor. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
