Scope and Content Glenfarclas Distillery, Ballindalloch, Banffshire This distillery was founded in 1836 by a farmer, Robert Hay. It was eventually acquired by the Grant family, who formed a limited company with Pattison Elder and Co in 1895, which rebuilt it. Pattisons collapsed in 1898, and the Grants again took over. This view shows the interior of the stillhouse, as extended in 1976. By 1980 there were six stills, all gas-fired. Note the railings round the walkway, installed to allow visitors safe access to the stillhouse, which was designed for public access. J and G Grant opened the first visitor centre in the malt whisky trade in 1973, beginning a trend which still continues in 2000. The firm is still privately owned, one of very few in an industry dominated by big business. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
