Scope and Content View of library fireplace in Barcaldine House, Argyll and Bute In the early 18th century the Campbells of Barcaldine abandoned Barcaldine Castle and built a new house 6km to the east. This was extended in 1733 and then superseded c.1759 by a new mansion which was extended and altered over the next two centuries. This 19th-century fireplace is of white and coloured marble. The jambs are ornamented with pilasters, or shallow projecting rectangles, which have foliage decoration. The central panel of the frieze depicts Cupid and Venus, who holds his bow. The library is on the first floor of the two-storeyed wing which was built in a 'Jacobethan' style in 1831-8 and added to the south-east corner of the house, which dated to c.1759. 'Jacobethan' is a blend of Jacobean and Elizabethan styles. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
