Scope and Content View of library in Barcaldine House, Argyll and Bute In the early 18th century the Campbells of Barcaldine abandoned Barcaldine Castle and built a new house 6km to the east. This was extended in 1733 and then superseded c.1759 by a new mansion which was extended and altered over the next two centuries. This library is on the first floor of the two-storeyed wing which was built in a 'Jacobethan' style in 1831-8 and added to the south-east corner of the house, which dated to c.1759. 'Jacobethan' is a blend of Jacobean and Elizabethan styles. The library wing has a large room on each floor. The library itself has a coved, or arched, panelled ceiling surrounded by an elaborate Classical cornice. The fireplace on the end wall is of white and coloured marble.
