Scope and Content Detail of inscription on north-east face of shaft of sundial at Asknish House, Argyll and Bute Asknish House was built for Robert Campbell of Asknish, sheriff-depute of Argyll. It was probably built between 1783 and 1787. This sundial stands in a field 130m south-east of the house and dates to the late 17th century. The shaft, which has been broken and repaired, is divided into five panels on each face. It is decorated with sunken hemispheres, hearts, a shield and geometrical devices. On this face, above a saltire, there are the initials 'S/D C' and 'L/H L'. The initials represent Sir Duncan Campbell of Auchenbreck and his wife Lady Henrietta Lindsay, who married in 1679. The sundial stands north of the supposed site of the former Campbell of Auchenbreck mansion, 'Kenlochgair', which Asknish House replaced. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
