Scope and Content Detail of carved panel above entrance to Kilberry Castle, Argyll and Bute Kilberry Castle, originally a tower-house dating to the late 16th century, was refurbished in 1727 but damaged by fire in 1772. In 1844 the remains were incorporated into a mansion designed by Thomas Brown, architect (c.1781-1850), and extended in 1873. Above the main entrance to the mansion is this small pediment-shaped stone bearing initials and the date 1497. Another panel below reads 'Plundered and burnt by Capt Proby an English pirate 1513; rebuilt J(ohn) C(ampbell) 1849'. In the 19th century, it was thought that a medieval monastery had stood on the site of Kilberry and these plaques, dating to the 19th century were to commemorate its destruction. It is now thought doubtful that there was a monastery here. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
