Scope and Content General view of Craignish Castle from north-west, Argyll and Bute Craignish Castle, originally a late medieval tower-house recorded as being incomplete in 1414, has been much altered and extended over the centuries. In 1837 a four-bay mansion was added, and in the 20th century, a staircase block was built. To the right is the original tower-house with its later hipped roof. Next to the tower is the block dating to 1837. Originally four-bayed and designed in an English Elizabethan style, it has an octagonal entrance tower. Two of the bays were later removed. On the gable wall of the shortened mansion, to the far left, is the 20th-century staircase block. The walls of the entire building are of harled rubble masonry and most of the surrounds are of green sandstone and probably date to the 19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
