Scope and Content Detail of steeple of Town House, Main Street, Campbeltown, Argyll and Bute The Town House in Campbeltown was erected in 1758-60 to replace an earlier tolbooth on the same site. Designed by John Douglas, it has a rectangular main block with an octagonal steeple projecting from the principal front. The original steeple of the Town House, which was made of timber, was replaced with this stone structure in 1778. Designed by the local mason-architect John Brown, the steeple rises in two stages, the upper stage surmounted by the spire and weathervane. The lower stage is decorated with square lug-moulded panels, the upper with tall round-headed alcoves, three of which contain clocks. The spire has some round-headed openings at its base and three tiers of sunk circular panels which diminish in size. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
