Scope and Content Detail of bell in steeple of Town House, Main Street, Campbeltown, Argyll and Bute The Town House in Campbeltown was erected in 1758-60 to replace an earlier tolbooth on the same site. Designed by John Douglas, it has a rectangular main block with an octagonal steeple projecting from the principal front. This steeple bell bears the following inscription 'THE TOWN OF CAMPBELTOUN: A C PRO(VOS)T: D B & R O BAILIES: 1779'. These initials commemorate Alexander Campbell, provost, and Duncan Baillie and Robert Orr, baillies. They had all been elected in 1778. The original steeple of the Town House, which was made of timber, had been replaced with a stone steeple in 1778 and the bell, which was probably cast in Bristol, may have been installed the following year. The new steeple was designed by John Brown. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
