Scope and Content Detail of library ceiling in south range of Dunderave Castle, Argyll and Bute Dunderave Castle, dating to the late 16th century, was a four-storeyed L-plan tower. Occupied until the early 19th century, it then became a roofless shell. In 1911-12 it was restored and extended by Sir Robert Lorimer for Sir Andrew northoble of Ardkinglas. The library, designed by Lorimer (1864-1929), has a barrel-vaulted ceiling which is decorated with panelled plasterwork by Thomas Beattie (c.1861-1933). This panel is decorated with trailing vines and in the centre are two birds eating grapes. Thomas Beattie, an architectural modeller who specialised in richly modelled ceilings, worked with Lorimer from the beginning of Lorimer's career. Lorimer worked with a carefully selected group of craftsmen who produced work of outstanding quality. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
