Scope and Content View of former kitchen fireplace on ground floor of Dunderave Castle, Argyll and Bute Dunderave Castle, dating to the late 16th century, was a four-storeyed L-plan tower. Occupied until the early 19th century, it then became a roofless shell. In 1911-12 it was restored and extended by Sir Robert Lorimer for Sir Andrew northoble of Ardkinglas. The original kitchen of the tower-house is sited at the north-east end of the main block. It has a segmental-arched fireplace, and the voussoirs, or stones which make up the arch, have rounded arrises, or edges. Many of the stones bear masons' marks. There is a recess, probably a salt-box, in the south-east jamb (right) of the fireplace. The rear of the fireplace has been altered and partly infilled to provide a service passage. The flue has also been used for service pipes and drainage. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
