Scope and Content Old Mill Cottage, Old Mill Lane, Nether Liberton, Edinburgh northether or Lower Liberton, one of four hamlets in the parish of Liberton, lies at the junction of Craigmillar Park and Gilmerton Road. It grew up around the twin activities of milling and brewing, both of which relied on the water of the Braid Burn. Old Mill Cottage stands above the Braid Burn, which, at one time, flowed through the village. The house, dating from the 18th century, was refronted c.1880. The mill buildings, which still retain their old iron mill wheel, have been restored as housing. The mill was in operation c.1840 when it was owned by Andrew Dick, the last miller to live and work at Nether Liberton. His house, a thatched cottage now demolished, stood near the mill buildings. The village brewery stood to the north. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
