Scope and Content Currie Village, Edinburgh Currie lies to the west of Juniper Green in the valley of the Water of Leith where the river flows between steep banks. The village developed as a farming and milling community around an ancient crossing of the river beside the old route to Lanark. The village was centred around the Currie Brig, first recorded in 1599, which linked the farms in the foothills of the Pentlands to the south with the farms and cottages on the north bank of the river, and the Victorian villas lining the old Lanark road. The name Currie, first recorded as a village community in 1300, may be a corruption of the Latin 'coria', a meeting place, or of the Celtic 'curagh', a mossy dell.
