Scope and Content The Old Change House at Currie Brig, Currie, Edinburgh Currie lies to the west of Juniper Green in the valley of the Water of Leith where the river flows between steep banks. The village developed as a farming and milling community around an ancient crossing of the river beside the old route to Lanark. This 17th-century thatched cottage stood on the north side of Currie Brig, with its east gable facing the bridge. The house had entrances on two levels, the upper level, with an access by steps down from the bridge, serving as a change house or inn. The house had a window in its east gable facing the bridge from which the inn-keeper could sell refreshments to the 'passing trade'. It was a convenient stop for carters who could hold their horses while drinking a glass of beer. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
