Scope and Content The ruins of the Old Change House at Currie Brig, Currie, Edinburgh Currie lies to the west of Juniper Green in the valley of the Water of Leith where the river flows between steep banks. The village developed as a farming and milling community around an ancient crossing of the river beside the old route to Lanark. The Old Change House, a 17th-century two-storeyed cottage, stood on the north side of the bridge, and once served as the village ale house or inn. Its thatched roof was burned down c.1938, and the remaining gables were later demolished. The Old Change House stood at an important crossing of the river on the route south to one of the passes over the Pentland Hills. It was a popular refreshment stop for carters on their way to Edinburgh, and for smugglers travelling from Ayr. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
