Scope and Content Nos 2-10 Raeburn Street, Stockbridge, Edinburgh Raeburn Street, built in 1816-19 as Hermitage Place, is a small-scale development of modest but quite showy terraced houses between Raeburn Place and Dean Street. It runs so closely parallel to Cheyne Street that it has houses on only one side. This charming row of Georgian houses, with small front gardens, has Greek Doric doorpieces in pairs with shared cornices. The pedimented centre house, No 6, stands forward from the row, and has Doric columns framing all its ground-floor openings. Raeburn Street has gate piers at each end, which originally allowed gates to be locked across the street at night. This early 'neighbourhood watch scheme' was a security device, common in the closes or lanes of the Old Town, to protect residents at night. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
