Scope and Content Aerial view of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital, Morningside, Edinburgh The Royal Edinburgh Hospital was designed by William Burn in 1839 to accommodate the 'pauper lunatics' of Edinburgh and Leith. It was built on land on the Morningside estate, and incorporated into its grounds the old weavers' hamlet of Tipperlinn. The 19th-century H-plan Royal Edinburgh Hospital is now linked by a covered way to the modern square Andrew Duncan Clinic, and the nine-storeyed University Department of Psychiatry. To the north is Tipperlinn House, now the hospital's Young People's Unit. In 1853, Tipperlinn, where, at one time, linen damask was woven in almost every cottage, was 'swept away' and 'the remaining portions of the quaint little village' were incorporated into the grounds of the expanding Royal Edinburgh Hospital.
