Scope and Content The Dominion Cinema, Newbattle Terrace, Morningside, Edinburgh The Dominion Cinema, designed by T Bowhill Gibson for Captain Cameron, opened in 1938. Still privately owned by the Cameron family, it maintains its complete independence from the film distribution organisations, and a friendly family atmosphere. The building, designed in the Art Deco style, is faced with pinkish Craighall cast stone, and has a horizontal canopy and vertical 'fin'. The interior, divided into two cinemas in 1972, was further divided to form three in 1979, and four in 1997. Morningside attracted two institutions which became synonymous with entertainment in the district: the Dominion Cinema in 1938, and the Plaza Ballroom in 1926. The Plaza closed in 1975, and was demolished in 1980 to make way for a supermarket. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
