Scope and Content Reid's Byres and cow-park, Old Morningside Village, Edinburgh, as seen from Morningside Park The old village of Morningside, once described as 'a row of thatched cottages, a line of trees and a blacksmith's forge', dates from the 18th century, when it was a country village surrounded by farms and estates that provided work for its inhabitants. Reid's Farm, on the west side of Morningside Road, was the main dairy farm in the old village. The byres extended over a wide area, but were demolished in 1899 to make way for the tenements of Springvalley Gardens and Terrace. The cows of the farm, numbered with large black figures painted on their flanks, walked unaccompanied each morning in single file down Morningside Road to pasture at the Hermitage of Braid, and each evening returned home in similar fashion for milking.
