Scope and Content Denholm's Smiddy, Old Morningside Village, Edinburgh The old village of Morningside, once described as 'a row of thatched cottages, a line of trees and a blacksmith's forge', dates from the 18th century, when it was a country village surrounded by farms and estates that provided work for its inhabitants. Denholm's Smiddy, the original 'blacksmith's forge' of Morningside, stood on the west side of Morningside Road in the heart of the old village. Built in the early 19th century, it was demolished in 1903 to make way for Morningside Public Library. The smiddy was a focal point of the village, where carters and ploughmen from surrounding farms brought their horses to be shod, and exchanged gossip. Here 'sheep's heids', a delicacy, were sent by butchers to be singed, to 'preserve the juiciest parts'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
