Catalogue Number SC 565028

Scope and Content Unidentified mural monument, Pencaitland churchyard, East Lothian Unfortunately the inscription on this handsome monument has become illegible. The remainder of the monument remains in good condition. Cherubs recline on the slopes of the stone, each holding an adjacent Cornucopia. Corinthian pilasters flank the inscription panel, headed by a winged cherub, symbol of the soul's ascent to heaven. Beneath is a frieze of emblems signifying death. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
