Scope and Content The Hermitage of Braid, Braid Road, Morningside, Edinburgh, from the west The Hermitage of Braid, the Edinburgh mansion house of Charles Gordon of Cluny, was built in 1785 by the architect, Robert Burn, in the wooded valley of the Braid Burn. It lies within the old Braid estate, between Greenbank and Blackford. This picturesque two-storeyed villa, with a three-bayed ashlar front, is in a mixture of Medieval and Classical styles, with turrets and battlements at the roofline, and Venetian windows on either side of a pretty fanlit door on the ground floor. The history of the Braid estate dates from the 12th century when Sir Henry de Brad built his castle here. In the 16th century the estate was bought by Sir Robert Fairley, who sold it to Sir William Dick in 1631. In 1772 it was bought by Charles Gordon. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
