Scope and Content The Hermitage of Braid, Braid Road, Morningside, Edinburgh, from the south The Hermitage of Braid, the Edinburgh mansion house of Charles Gordon of Cluny, was built in 1785 by the architect, Robert Burn, in the wooded valley of the Braid Burn. It lies within the old Braid estate, between Greenbank and Blackford. The house faces south over sloping lawns to the Braid Burn. The south rubble-built wall, with arched windows over a deep basement, is perfectly symmetrical, broken only by the later addition of a dormer window. To the west of the house on the north bank of the burn, are the remains of a grain mill, converted to a paper mill c.1700. Deeds, dated 1700 and 1703, discovered in Edinburgh's Register House, bear the watermark 'Braid'. The mill ceased operation in 1707. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
