Scope and Content Prestonfield House, Priestfield Road, Duddingston, Edinburgh, from the south Prestonfield House, now a hotel, stands on the south side of Duddingston Loch. It was designed in the 1680s by Sir William Bruce for Sir James Dick, Lord Provost of Edinburgh, to replace an earlier house burnt down by a student demonstration in 1681. This tall house, under the backdrop of Arthur's Seat, lost some of its vertical emphasis with the early 19th-century banking of the ground to hide the basement. The porte-cochère, added to the west front in 1818, forms the main entrance. Sir Alexander Dick, grandson of Sir James, entertained Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Charles Edward Stewart or Bonnie Prince Charlie) at Prestonfield House in 1745. Later visitors were Dr Johnson and James Boswell who, at one time, contemplated writing a biography of Sir Alexander Dick. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
