Scope and Content Hawthorne Brae, No 46 The Causeway, Duddingston, Edinburgh The Causeway, Duddingston's main street, is a narrow lane which runs from the gates of the church the length of the village. It has a number of 18th- and 19th-century houses, as well as the village's only public house, the 18th-century Sheep Heid Inn. Hawthorne Brae, built c.1820, stands on a commanding site, surrounded by mature trees, to the north of the lane. This large villa, with basement and attics, has several Victorian additions, and a grand splayed staircase leading to the columned entrance. The house was privately owned until 1897, when it was given to the Edinburgh Medical Missionary Society as a boarding house for children whose parents were teaching overseas. It returned to private use in 1998, and is now being carefully restored. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
