Scope and Content Nesting boxes in the Dovecot at Malleny House, Currie, Edinburgh Malleny House, built for the Scott family in the first half of the 18th century, incorporates an earlier building dating from the 16th century. The house and gardens now belong to the northational Trust for Scotland. The dovecot, possibly associated with the 16th-century house, is lined with 915 sandstone boxes for nesting birds. Each 'pigeon-hole' provided a warm dry nesting place, free from predators, and allowed easy access for egg collection. The function of the dovecot was to provide the estate with an economical all-year-round supply of fresh meat (a popular dish being pigeon-pie) and eggs. Even the droppings could be collected and used as fertiliser for the vegetable garden. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
