Scope and Content Arcade from the north, Chessel's Court, No 240 Canongate, Edinburgh The original Chessel's Court was built from 1745, and consists of a group of tenements around an open courtyard off the Canongate. By the 1940s the area was in need of regeneration, and the architect Robert Hurd (d.1963) was employed to design new blocks in conjunction with the restoration of the historic original buildings. This was completed between 1958 and 1966. This shows the new frontage onto the Canongate, built 1958-66. The rendered walls have rows of windows without glazing bars, creating a modern effect. The top storey is set back but conforms to the roofline of its neighbours. The ground-floor level is arcaded, creating open access to the courtyard beyond. This block is complemented by a new block in Modern harled style with balconied windows to the east, a new interior within an old building to the west, and the renovated original 18th-century block to the south. This group of buildings represents an early example of conservation and innovative new building within the same area. Chessel's Court has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
