Scope and Content The former Falcon Hall, Morningside Road, Morningside, Edinburgh Falcon Hall, designed c.1814 by Thomas Hamilton for Alexander Falconar, stood on the east side of Morningside Road within the Canaan estate. The building incorporated Morningside Lodge, an impressive house built in 1780 for Lord Provost William Coulter. The bow end (right) and the rectangular end (left) indicate something of the original house. Thomas Hamilton added a two-storeyed building with a palatial frontage and entrance portico of 12 great columns of Craigleith stone to the west. Alexander Falconar, a wealthy former Chief Secretary to the Governor of Madras, retired in 1811 and settled with his wife and 14 children in Morningside. He and five of his daughters were benefactors of Morningside Parish Church, and the village school. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
