Scope and Content Detail of the gable of the west wing, Baberton House, Juniper Green, Edinburgh Baberton House, built in 1622 for Sir James Murray, Master of Works to King James VI, stands between Juniper Green and Wester Hailes on land given to Sir James by the king. The house, privately owned until 1977, is now used as office premises. The rubble-built house, a traditional Scots mansion, has some fine original architectural detail incorporated on the windows and chimneys. The window pediment on the west gable bears the initials 'K W' for Katherine Weir, wife of James Murray. As Master of Works, James Murray was responsible for remodelling the north half of the 'Palace' at Edinburgh Castle in 1615-17 as a ceremonial royal lodging for King James VI, as well as 'drawin of the modell' for Parliament House c.1632.
