Description South Leith churchyard. T C and C L, d.1757

Collection Papers of Betty Willsher, historian, St Andrews, Scotland

Catalogue Number B 4128/11

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Copies SC 560202

Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating T C and C L, South Leith churchyard, Edinburgh The inscription of this gravestone records only the initials T C and C L, presumably husband and wife, along with the date 1757. Within the lower panel's border are what appear to be a pair of shovels crossed over a mash-oar, both tools used by a maltman. A pair of winged cherubs, carved in full relief, decorated the shoulders of this stone. Like the cherub in the pediment, these symbolise the soul ascending to heaven. Below, the 'MEMENTO MORI' scroll and grinning skull speak of death and mortality. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
