Scope and Content East face of a gravestone commemorating Andrew Wauch and Elizabeth Hunter, South Leith churchyard, Edinburgh This gravestone commemorates Andrew Wauch, a flesher (a butcher), who died in 1759 aged 68. His wife, Elizabeth Hunter, who died in 1771, is also interred here. The winged cherub represents the heavenward ascent of the soul. Beneath, within a cartouche containing their initials, is a sheaf of corn normally associated with brewers or bakers. Perhaps this symbol relates to whoever had this stone erected. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
