Scope and Content Union Railway Bridge, Clyde Street, Glasgow This bridge was constructed to replace a structure built in 1864-7 for the City of Glasgow Union Railway, jointly promoted by the North British and Glasgow and South Western railways. The new bridge was built to serve the extended St Enoch Station. This view shows the bridge from the north east, with its arched steel spans sandstone -clad piers, and cast iron parapet. The arched outer girders have fastenings for cast iron facings, but these were not installed. This bridge provided four tracks over the river instead of its predecessor's two, and could take heavier trains. Though St Enoch station was closed in 1966, and has been demolished, this bridge still carries cross-river freight. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
