Scope and Content Albert Bridge, Saltmarket, Glasgow This bridge was constructed to replace a structure designed by Robert Stevenson, and built in 1829-33. This one was wider, and may have been intended to carry a double line of horse trams. It has malleable-iron arched girders with cast-iron cladding. This view shows the bridge from the north east, with the cast iron cladding and parapet of one of the three spans. Note the poortrait head of Prince Albert on the abutment to the right. The contractors for this bridge were Hanna, Donald and Wilson of Paisley, the leading exponents of iron bridge construction in the west of Scotland at that date. Within a few years Glasgow firms had surpassed them. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
