Scope and Content Cast-iron gates, The Necropolis, Cathedral Square, Glasgow The Necropolis was laid out in 1833 by the Merchants' House of Glasgow as Scotland's first 'hygeinic cemetery'., and occupied ground owned by the House to the east of Cathedral Square. A bridge was built to link the cemetery with the square. This view shows a detail of the gates from the square into the Necropolis, with the name of the ironfounders, T Edington and Sons, on the bar above the circular motif in the centre. Edingtons' foundry was the Phoenix, at Port Dundas. These dates carry an inscription referring to William Brown, Dean of Guild (head of the Merchants' House) in 1837-38, so it is likely that these gates were cast in 1838, perhaps replacing temporary gates.
