Scope and Content Bridgend Woollen Mill, Isle of Islay, Argyll This small water-powered woollen mill was built to replace a smaller mill on an adjacent site, the building of which still survived in 1998. Thi one was an integrated mill, taking raw wool and turning out tweeds and blankets. This view shows the piecing machine in the carding room, a rare survival from c1860. This was built to a patent by Robert Archibald of Devon Vale, Tillicoultry, and removed strips of carded fibre from the carding engine and joined them together. The carding and spinning machinery in this mill is of outstanding interest. It was out-of date in 1883, and may have been acquired second-hand from the mainland. The piecing machine is a unique survivor. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
