Scope and Content View of porte-cochère on east front of Knockdow House, Argyll and Bute The original Knockdow House was probably built just before 1765. The Greenock mason, John Menelaws, was described then as 'mason at Kirkmichael in northether Coull'. To the left, is the side wing added in 1817 as a single storey and heightened in 1884. In 1919-21 the east range was extended by the Edinburgh architect Mackie Watson (1859-1948). The entrance doorway is enclosed by a porte-cochère, built from large blocks of masonry. It has three round arches below open pediments. The estate of Kilmichael was acquired in 1753 by Colin Lamont and became the seat of the Lamont family until 1949. The name Knockdow was not used for the mansion until the second quarter of the 19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
