Scope and Content View of Castle Toward from the south, Argyll and Bute Castle Toward was built in two stages. The original house was erected in 1820 for Kirkman Finlay, a wealthy Glasgow merchant. In 1920-4 the west section of the house was added for Andrew Coats, a member of the Paisley thread-making family. This south façade incorporates work from both stages. The east section (right) just beyond the central tower, was designed by David Hamilton (1768-1843) in 1820. In 1920 Francis Deas added the west section (left) and altered the east section. Deas (1862-1951) added a third, or attic storey, and more elaborate detailing to the battlements. He also added two ground-floor bay windows and a central balcony. Hamilton designed a Gothic castellated house and Deas worked in the same style. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
