Scope and Content View of Castle Toward from the south-west, Argyll and Bute Castle Toward was built in two stages. The original house was erected in 1820 for Kirkman Finlay, a wealthy Glasgow merchant. In 1920-4 the west section of the house was added for Andrew Coats, a member of the Paisley thread-making family. To the right, is the early part of the house designed by David Hamilton (1768-1843) in 1820 in a Gothic style. At the far right is the porte-cochère, battlemented and turreted. Rising above the porte-cochère is a square tower with turreted corners. The tower has a pointed-arch window with a hood-mould. There is another square tower in the centre of the façade with corbels and battlements. This was followed by a lower wing, which was greatly extended by Francis Deas (1862-1951) in 1920-4.
