Scope and Content Detail of south window of porte-cochère at Castle Toward, Argyll and Bute Castle Toward was built in two stages. The original house was erected in 1820 for Kirkman Finlay, a wealthy Glasgow merchant. In 1920-4 the west section of the house was added for Andrew Coats, a member of the Paisley thread-making family. The porte-cochère, on the right of the south façade of the castle, was designed by David Hamilton (1768-1843) in 1820. Its window is glazed with stained glass in the shape of octagons. Stained glass was very fashionable in Gothic buildings of this period. The window is arched, and the spandrels above the arch are decorated with geometric shapes. Above the window is a rectangular hood-mould, known as a label-mould. The ends are decorated with label-masks, or stops, carved from stone in the shape of faces.
