Scope and Content View of Barbreck House from the south, Argyll and Bute The original Campbells of Barbreck lost their estate by forfeiture in 1732. Part of it was granted in 1768 by the 4th Duke of Argyll to General John Campbell, who increased the estate by purchases and built Barbreck House in 1790. The hip-roofed three-storeyed main block has an attic. The central three bays, surmounted by a pediment, are slightly projected and incorporate the entrance doorway. Screen-walls on either side of the main block are linked to two-storeyed pavilions. The house forms one side of a courtyard, the other three sides formed by ranges of farm buildings. The centrepiece of the house is of grey sandstone while the rest is covered with a colourwashed cement render. The dressings are of sandstone. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
