Scope and Content Detail of coat of arms on pediment of Barbreck House, Argyll and Bute The original Campbells of Barbreck lost their estate by forfeiture in 1732. Part of it was granted in 1768 by the 4th Duke of Argyll to General John Campbell, who increased the estate by purchases and built Barbreck House in 1790. This pediment above the centrepiece bears the arms of General John Campbell over the incised date of 1790. The motto above the shield, 'ARMA PARATA FERO', translates as 'I bear my arms at the ready'. Two original lead rainwater heads decorated with embossed swags are on either side of the shield. The pediment is surmounted by an urn finial decorated with laurel leaf swags.
