Scope and Content Detail of urn finial on parapet of Barbreck House, Argyll and Bute The original Campbells of Barbreck lost their estate by forfeiture in 1732. Part of it was granted in 1768 by the 4th Duke of Argyll to General John Campbell, who increased the estate by purchases and built Barbreck House in 1790. Finials are formal ornaments found, for example, at the top of gables or pinnacles. The finials on Barbreck House are in the shape of urns. Carved from stone, they are decorated with fluting and rosettes. The centrepiece of the south-west front of the house is surmounted by a pediment. The pediment has one urn finial on either side and an urn finial above. There are also urn finials on the corners of the main block and the pavilions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
