Scope and Content Drawing showing south-west elevation of Barbreck House, Argyll and Bute The original Campbells of Barbreck lost their estate by forfeiture in 1732. Part of it was granted in 1768 by the 4th Duke of Argyll to General John Campbell, who increased the estate by purchases and built Barbreck House in 1790. The quoins (at the corners of the building) are rusticated and offset. A plain ashlar string-course indicates the first floor. The windows have plain surrounds, except for the central first-floor window which has a fluted frieze and dentillated cornice. The door is flanked by Tuscan pilasters surmounted by a fluted frieze. The main block is linked to the two-storeyed pavilions by screen-walls. The three arches on each wall have no openings and were designed as blind arches. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
