Scope and Content View of sundial at Ardlamont House from north-west, Argyll and Bute Ardlamont was the principal residence of the Lamonts of Lamont from about 1664. In 1818 Major-General John Lamont decided, despite inherited debts, to rebuild the house 'fit for my family on the most limited and frugal plan'. This sundial stands in the garden at Ardlamont House. It consists of three sections: the shaft of red sandstone; the faceted octagon; and the obelisk of grey sandstone. At the top is a modern metal orrery which shows the movements of the planets. The octagon is decorated with sunken hearts and circles surrounding flat discs with gnomons, or pins of dials, whose shadow points to the hour. The obelisk, which is less weathered than the other sections, has three dials on each face. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
