Scope and Content View of Arkland from the south, Main Street South, Inveraray, Argyll and Bute Robert Mylne (1734-1811) was the architect responsible for much of the design of new Inveraray. Arkland, at the south end of the town, was built to his design by the mason, John Marr, in 1774-5, to house tenants who were being removed from the old town. This block of 'Great Houses' is three-storeyed. The division into five 'houses', each of three bays, is obvious from the window-spacing and chimney-stacks with moulded copings. The door and window dressings are of sandstone, now painted black. Each 'house' has a central doorway serving the ground floor, and access to the upper floors is via an external stone stair at the rear. The ground floor of each comprised two dwellings whilst the other floors were single dwellings of four rooms. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
