Scope and Content View of Factory Land and Ferry Land from the south, Inveraray, Argyll and Bute The two-storeyed range of Factory Land was built in 1774 by John Marr in what was regarded as the industrial quarter of Inveraray. The three-storeyed range of Ferry Land to the right was built in 1777. Factory Land has a six-bayed front which faces Loch Fyne. It is divided into two units with central doorways by a mid-wall carrying a chimney-stack. It was built to contain a 'Factory for the spinning of wool' for the philanthropic 5th Duke of Argyll. The factory was on the upper floor, with eight houses below. In 1777 the factory was moved to Claonairigh and the upper floor converted to domestic use. Ferry Land was built and inhabited by the tenant of the ferry to St Catherines until 1969. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
