Scope and Content Hallway of Poltalloch House, Argyll and Bute This Jacobean-style mansion, now a roofless shell, was designed for Neill Malcolm between 1849 and 1853 by the London office of William Burn (1789-1870). Burn initiated the Scottish Baronial style for Scottish country houses. This stair hall is decorated with timber panelling. To the right is a large Jacobean-style overmantel. To the left is a massive timber stair lit by a six-light window which contains armorial stained glass. There is a large organ, also to the left. By the 1840s the function of the hall within large houses was changing. Many people, especially those interested in Gothic architecture, felt the hall should become the principal and central room in the house, as it had been in medieval times.
