Scope and Content View of the east service courtyard at Castle Toward, Argyll and Bute The original Castle Toward was erected in 1820 for Kirkman Finlay. The architect was David Hamilton (1768-1843) who designed it in a Gothic castellated style. In 1920-4 the house was altered and extended in the same style by Francis Deas (1862-1951). This single-storeyed service courtyard, by Hamilton, is to the north-east of the main building and is in the same Gothic castellated style. The entrance is a four-centred archway, with a hood-mould above. The small tower above the archway is a bellcote. Four-centred arches were common in Gothic architecture. They are formed from four arcs, two of which describe arcs from the springing point and two of which describe arcs below that level. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
